Emerald Ash Borer Discovered in Coon Rapids

Emerald Ash Borer

The first Emerald Ash Borer infestation has been discovered in the northern part of Coon Rapids.

The City Forester discovered the infected tree in late February in the 500 block of 127th Lane near Bunker Hills Regional Park. It was found on a City-owned boulevard tree. The City Forester was trimming trees in preparation for street reconstruction this summer.

Emerald Ash Borer has also been found recently in Blaine and was found in Andover in 2016 and in Ham Lake in 2015. The invasive beetle, which was first found in Minnesota back in 2009, destroys ash trees.

What is the City doing to deal with Emerald Ash Borer? (EAB)

  • The City has taken a pro-active approach to remove boulevard Ash trees in poor condition, before the Emerald Ash Borer larvae sets in and eats away the tree.
  • New tree varieties are planted where trees have been removed.
  • Since 2010, a total of 515 boulevard Ash trees have been removed and replaced. If you live on a street where a boulevard Ash tree was removed, please know a new tree will be planted in its place this spring.

What can homeowners do?

  • If you are interested in having a boulevard ash tree removed, contact the City Forester at
  • If you own an ash tree on your private property, you may choose to wait and see if it becomes infested with EAB or take a pro-active approach and cut down the tree and replace it with a new tree of a different variety.
  • Insecticide treatments can be used to eliminate the pest. It is an individual homeowner’s choice if they want to use insecticide treatments, which require time and investment as treatments must take place every 2 to 3 years. The City Forester recommends working with a certified Arborist for the best results. A list of Certified Arborists who chemically treat for EAB is listed on the City’s website.

If you have further questions about Emerald Ash Borer, call the City Forester at 763-767-6455 or visit the Forestry area of the City website.
