The Utilities Division is responsible operating and maintaining Coon Rapids' water system. This includes pumps and filtration equipment located in wellhouses and treatment plants, repairing damaged water mains, locating related underground valves and water meter maintenence. Division personnel are highly trained in all aspects of operation, maintenence and repairs.

Well systems are inspected daily and monitered by Utilities Division personnel to ensure proper operation.

Both water treatment facilities have trained and licensed Utilities Division personnel assignedto properly monitor, inspect and repair water filtration equipiment.

Water main breaks are often caused by constant shifting of soils beneath roadways and due to frost and temperature fluctuations during winter months. Breaks also occer simply due to age. Utilities and Public Works personnel respond by making necessary repairs both to the affected water main and roadway.

The Utilities Division is responsible for the installation and repair of commercial and residential water meters. Locating water shutoffs and other related valves is another important task. Once located, valves are mapped and recorded into the City's GIS mapping system for future reference. GIS is also used to record data regarding location of fire hydrants, water main breaks and other related repairs.
